On the Superior Shelf: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

A second oak barrel, a distinctive bottle and a Mariano’s shelf sighting: a closer look at Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.

A second barrel is the story

The broad bottle, wooden closure and copper lettering make Woodford Reserve Double Oaked easy to pick out. But the most useful detail is lower down: the label says this Kentucky straight bourbon is finished in a second oak barrel.

According to Woodford Reserve’s product page, that second barrel is deeply toasted before receiving a light char. That is the production choice behind the name. “Double Oaked” describes the barrel treatment; it is not an age statement.

For more on why a finishing stage matters, our guide to maturation and finishing explains the distinction through sherry casks. This bottle offers a different example: a further oak-barrel stage.

Reading the bottle

The front label gives the strength as 45.2% ABV and 90.4 proof, matching the producer’s published specifications. The supplied back view names the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky as producer.

This is a bottle feature, not a new tasting. The colour and label can tell us what is on the shelf; they cannot stand in for a pour, a verdict or a score.
