A Highland malt with a bourbon-cask finish

Black label, gold borders, and a handwritten $18.99 shelf sign: this Trader Joe’s bottle puts its cask story front and centre. It is labelled Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, with Bourbon Cask Finish and Double Maturation directly below.

The finish describes the casks used for the Scotch. It does not make the whisky bourbon. Here, the useful questions are what the label says about that second stage, who bottled it, and which details remain undisclosed.

Two stages, with the second cask identified

The front label divides its explanation into First Cask and Second Cask. It describes traditional oak maturation followed by a finish in first-fill bourbon casks. That gives a more specific account than the large Double Maturation heading alone.

Neither stage is assigned a duration in the visible label text. We have not supplied an age, inferred a cask recipe beyond that description, or carried over the age of a neighbouring bottle.

A bottler’s name is not a distillery identification

Hamish Robertson & Co. appears on the front as bottler, while Latitude Wines, LLC appears on the rear as importer. The front says the whisky was distilled and bottled for Trader Joe’s; the rear uses blended and bottled for. Both labels identify the product as Highland single malt Scotch whisky. None of this names the source distillery.

The bottler also appears on our separately photographed Ink & Thistle 18. That shared bottler does not establish a shared distillery, recipe or age.

The label’s tasting description

The rear label describes a light, leafy and floral aroma, vanilla and oak, then a mellow sweetness with fruit and subtle spice. It characterises the finish as clean, with lingering vanilla. These are the bottle label’s descriptions, not tasting notes from our panel. We have not assigned a score or a buying verdict.

The photographed $18.99 price

The supplied shelf sign names Trader Joe’s Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Bourbon Cask Finish and displays $18.99. The expression and finish match the bottle shown immediately above it.
