ON THE SUPERIOR SHELF
On the Superior Shelf: Dead Drop Bourbon
An ornate label, a Thornton, Illinois connection and a blend of straight bourbons: a closer look at the 94-proof Dead Drop bottle.

A label that earns a second look
Dead Drop’s bottle has the detail of an old printed handbill: an arched name, a crescent moon, a central drop motif and a yellow bourbon banner. The phrase “From Drop to Dram” sits above the illustration. Turn the bottle around, and the design gives way to a more useful explanation of the whiskey.
That is the appeal of this entry in On the Superior Shelf: a striking bottle with enough information on both sides to reward a closer look.
The facts on the front
The supplied front image identifies Straight Bourbon Whiskey at 47% alcohol by volume and 94 proof, in a 750 ml bottle. It also states non-chill filtered and names Thornton Distilling Company.
These are the specifications of the pictured bottle, not a tasting verdict. We have not assigned Dead Drop a score or claimed a flavor profile from looking at the label.
The Thornton connection

The back describes a blend of selected straight bourbon whiskies and refers to limestone-filtered water from the company’s artesian well. Thornton’s official bourbon information sheet (PDF) adds that the blend uses high-rye straight bourbons and is slowly brought to bottling strength with that water.
The blend description matters. The company named on the bottle does not, by itself, identify the distillery behind every component whiskey. We are leaving component origins and mashbill percentages unspecified rather than filling in gaps.
For more about the company, visit Thornton Distilling. We do not yet have a dedicated Thornton distillery guide in our directory.
